📚閱讀

One of the unexpected benefit of living in Taiwan that I’ve come to greatly appreciate is the uncensored access to printed reading material, in Traditional Chinese.

Since the completion of my first year of Chinese language studies, I’ve always been eager to read some “real life” material, without a vocabulary list as reading crutches, but often had a hard time to find books suitable for my level, and in line with my interests.

So I thought of sharing my Chinese reading list here for other enthusiastic Chinese learners – such as my young self – to poke at, and also as a reminder for myself to keep practicing. 「活到老,學到老」as the saying goes.

Originally, I had only listed readings in Chinese, then thought that it wouldn’t hurt to add Taiwan-related material, and finally, ended up adding a section for Greater Asia. Some books have helped improve my reading skills, while others have enlightened me on the neighbouring countries/cultures and how they relate to Taiwan.

Some notes about the symbols used:

  • 🇯🇵: books translated from Japanese
  • 🇫🇷: books in French
  • 🇨🇳繁: books from China, in Traditional Chinese
  • 🇨🇳简: books from China, in Simplified Chinese
  • 臺: presence of Taiwanese/Minnan terms

And if you happen to be in Taiwan, I recommend checking out a bookstore or two. 🙂

Because not everyone lives near an Eslite 誠品 bookstore, here are places online to get inspired:

Admittedly, my readings have revolved around food-related subjects, but I’m looking to turn that around a bit, so feel free to send some suggestions. 😁
