Book Review: Fresh Off the Boat by Eddie Huang

Two book reviews in a row?! Well, yes, there’s still such a thing called Summer Reading which I joyfully partake in, and gladly share on the blog. Well, in Taiwan, it should probably be renamed to Typhoon Season Reading, so stock up on food and books for the days you’ll be stranded at home.

There is the VICE show called Fresh Off the Boat, and now there’s also the book, both productions signed by Eddie Huang. Besides his grudge against David Chang’s pork bun, and his exuberant videos, I had never really heard of the guy before, nor was familiar with his past. So, I was quite excited when I got my hand on his book, not knowing what to expect beyond stories of newly arrived Asian immigrants to America, because his story is indeed beyond the average Asian-American kid growing in America. At least, unlike anything I have read before, though I’m sure many others have lived similar experience to his. Continue reading Book Review: Fresh Off the Boat by Eddie Huang

In Run-up to Meeting with Top U.S. Representative, Taiwan Vows to Maintain Ban on Pork Containing Ractopamine

Aside from health issues such contaminated meat could bring, importing pork would also undermine Taiwan’s food security and agriculture. Let’s hope the Taiwanese governement will make wise decisions on this issue.

Agriculture in China 农业中国

The issue of U.S. pork imports is more complicated and challenging than the beef one, opposition Democratic Progressive Party Chairman Su Tseng-chang said Saturday, advising the authorities to handle the issue prudently.

The government has assured the people again and again that it will handle the two issues separately, Su said while answering reporters’ questions about American Institute in Taiwan Chairman Raymond Burghardt’s call the previous day for Taiwan not to treat U.S. pork imports differently from its beef imports.

If the pork import becomes an issue, President Ma Ying-jeou’s promise will be strongly questioned, he said. Pork is very popular in Taiwan and there are many hog farms in the country, he added, warning that the pork issue is “much more complicated and challenging” than beef imports.

In response, Agriculture Minister Chen Bao-ji stressed that the government won’t open its doors to imports of pork containing residue of ractopamine…

Bourdain(?) and Zimmern in Taiwan

[en] Ok, I give up, for now at least. Anthony Bourdain did make a stop in Taiwan during his days on the Food Channel, and if I am not delillusional, I remember once finding a footage of him in Taipei, but since I can no longer find it, I’m afraid I’m losing my head… so if anyone can find that said footage, and hence proving that I’m not crazy, please raise your hand!

In the meantime, let’s console ourselves (video below) with Andrew Zimmern who did shoot an episode of Bizarre Foods in Taiwan. Too bad he only stayed around the Taipei area as I think he could have discovered more bizarre food by checking out other parts of the island.

Know any other TV shows that featured Taiwan and its food? (Please don’t mention The Bachelorrette 😉 )

update 2012/06/12: some facebook pages have sprung up petitioning for Bourdain to come to Taiwan, but it’s already a done deal. Taiwan get ready for this summer! 😉
